Many disorders caused by the deviation of the septum cartilage, which divides the nose in two from the inside, are resolved with septoplasty (deviation) surgery.

What is Deviation?

The partly cartilage and partly bone structure that separates the nose symmetrically into two parts located on the inside of the nose is called septum. The deviation of the septum is called septum deviation. This deviation can be congenital or occur due to traumas experienced later. The operation performed to correct these deviations of the septum is called septum deviation. Since the septum deviation operation is performed on the inside of the nose, it does not cause any visible changes from the outside. The purpose of septum deviation is to correct the function of the nose.

What Causes Septum Deviation?

When septum deviation is not treated, it can cause many diseases. These diseases can be listed as follows;

  • Nasal congestion
  • Postnasal drip
  • Facial and headache
  • Upper respiratory tract diseases
  • Nosebleeds
  • Deterioration in voice quality and nasal speech
  • Snoring
  • Apnea
  • Ear disorders (blockage, fluid accumulation)

Due to septum deviation, the nose begins to function functionally. Due to the deviation in the nose, the person cannot breathe healthily. For this reason, a nose that cannot breathe properly causes the body not to receive enough oxygen. As a result, lung and heart diseases can also occur.

How is Deviation Surgery (Septolasty) Performed?

Deviation surgery, or septoplasty, is an operation performed under general anesthesia and is performed with closed methods.

With septoplasty, the curvatures in the nose are corrected. Since this correction process is performed inside the nose, there is no visible change from the outside. When the septum at the entrance of the nose, which we can call the door of oxygen to the body, and the obstacle in front of the channels extending to the nasopharynx are removed, breathing is also brought to the required level.

How Long Does Deviation Surgery Take?

The surgery will be completed in 1.5-2 hours, including preparation, anesthesia, and recovery processes. Depending on the patient’s condition, they may stay in the hospital for one night.

Are There Risks to Deviation Surgery?

Before the surgery, anesthesiologist doctors routinely check your body for any problems with anesthesia with blood tests. If a problem is detected as a result of these blood tests, all risks are minimized since the necessary examinations will be performed by specialist physicians on the subject.

At What Age Is Deviation Surgery Performed?

If there is no trauma or urgent situation, deviation, or septoplasty surgery, can be performed from the age of 18. If there was a trauma that required urgent as we said, there is no age limit for this.

What Happens If I Don’t Have Deviation Surgery?

A problem anywhere from the entrance to the exit of the nostrils prevents air passage. Deviation (nasal curvature) prevents a person from breathing properly and lays the foundations for many health problems.

Breathing properly means that the body can receive plenty of oxygen. Breathing properly and healthily contributes to a quality life cycle, from sleep disorders to stress and a stronger immune system. People who breathe less may feel more tired and stressed. Apart from these, diseases caused by deviation can be listed as follows;

Nasal congestion, postnasal drip, facial and headache, upper respiratory tract diseases, nosebleeds, deterioration in voice quality and nasal speech, snoring, apnea, ear disorders (blockage, fluid accumulation).

Is There Stitching in Deviation Surgery?

Since septum deviation surgery is an operation performed inside the nose, it does not cause any visible changes from the outside.

How Many Days Does Septoplasty Take to Heal?

After a septoplasty (deviation) operation, the patient can go home after a one-night hospital stay. After that, depending on the patient’s general condition, they can return to their daily lives within a week at most.
